Self–Awareness Begins with Action | Myriam Monterrubio

This session explores fostering self-awareness in children, defining it as the conscious understanding of one’s emotions, thoughts, and abilities. Self-awareness develops in layers: body, emotional, and reflective. Adults, particularly teachers and parents, profoundly shape a child’s self-perception through their words and actions, often unintentionally hindering independence. The speaker advocates for intentional teaching, patient rehearsal of skills, and specific, loving reinforcement. Practical strategies include mindful greetings, expressing feelings with mirrors, “I can” activities, and “all about me” exercises. Ultimately, positive adult modeling and wise word choice are crucial for helping children discover who they truly are.
